A pupil of the neoclassical landscape painter Jean-Victor Bertin, Jules Coignet moved away from the Arcadian vein of antique landscapes inspired by Italy and developed a more sensitive picturesque style. In this way, he continued the Romantic landscape tradition of the turn of the century, before moving closer to the Barbizon School. A regular at the Salon, he was awarded a gold medal in 1824 and made a chevalier of the Légion d'honneur in 1836.
