Description
SHAKUDO BRACELET AND BARRETTE BROCH, JAPAN, EARLY 20th CENTURY. Engraved and nielloed gilt metal with silver inlay in the Shakudo technique, the bracelet with hexagonal links, the barrette brooch.
There is a safety chain on the bracelet.
The damascening technique known as "nuome-zogan" consists of using a hammer to inlay fine threads of gold, silver or copper into cuts made in an iron, steel or copper object to create a decoration. In this case, the silver is inlaid with Asian-inspired motifs. The backs of the hexagonal links feature various motifs: bamboo, seascapes, flowers or water lilies, mountains, swallows flying over reeds, ships, butterflies, a mountain village and the character "福", a symbol of luck and happiness, visible on the last link and behind the brooch.
