A landscape painter on the fringes of the Académie and official events, Louis-Gabriel Moreau revived the landscape tradition of the Dutch Golden Age while adapting it to the new sensibility emerging in the 18th century, combining views of ruins and atmospheric effects. He was thus part of the pre-romantic trend developed by landscape painters at the end of the 18th century, such as Hubert Robert and Pierre-Jacques Volaire.
