After a short military career, Raymond Quinsac Monvoisin decided to devote himself to painting in 1808. He joined Pierre-Narcisse Guérin's studio and worked on romanticised mythological subjects, already a far cry from David's great history paintings. Influenced by the Romantic movement, he went on to paint Orientalist and historicist subjects, which won him great success with bourgeois clients. After a spell at the Académie de France in Rome, he moved to Chile, where he became director of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Santiago.
