Ambroise Vollard, a major art dealer and publisher, commissions Georges Rouault, whom he has represented since 1910, to produce a series of etchings inspired by the grotesque character of Ubu created by Alfred Jarry. The project was delayed, however, as Rouault constantly reworked his plates and Vollard demanded images in line with his idea. The engravings were not published until after Vollard's death in 1948. In these prints, Rouault reinterprets Jarry's character using thick lines, dramatic modelling and strong contrasts.
