Description
LITTLE TRANSITION PERIOD JUMPING COMMODE, ENAMELLED BY JEAN HOLTHAUSEN. Wood veneer and cube marquetry. It opens with two drawers without a crosspiece, the uprights are canted and the legs are curved. Ornamented with gilded bronzes such as: ribbon knot escutcheons, mobile draw rings, flamed vase, apron and sabots. Breche marble top. Stamped on the back: J. HOLTHAUSEN and JME Damage and restoration, sunstain Height 85 cm - Width 79 cm - Depth 43.5 cm Jean Holthausen was awarded the title of master cabinetmaker in Paris on 17 August 1764. His stamp has been found on a number of fine pieces of marquetry furniture, including a small table in the Massey-Mainwaring collection in London (Comte de Salverte, Les Ébénistes du XVIIIe siècle, Paris, Vanoest, 1953, p. 155).
