Born in Utrecht into a family of artists, van Liender apprenticed with Cornelis Pronk (1691-1759). A close friend of the collector and patron Pieter Teyler van der Hulst (1702-1778), he was a member of the board of the Academy of Drawing set up by the latter in his house in Haarlem. A great landscape draughtsman and heir to the Dutch topographical vein, in his mature period he adopted a taste for ruins, reflecting a pre-romantic sensibility.
