Description
PAULUS VAN LIENDER (Utrecht 1731-1797 Haarlem). Landscape of a castle park with three antique figures Pen and brown ink, watercolour and black stone Signed lower right Height 19 cm - Width 24.5 cm Born in Utrecht into a family of artists, van Liender apprenticed with Cornelis Pronk (1691-1759). A close friend of the collector and patron Pieter Teyler van der Hulst (1702-1778), he was a member of the board of the Academy of Drawing set up by the latter in his house in Haarlem. A great landscape draughtsman and heir to the Dutch topographical vein, in his mature period he adopted a taste for ruins, reflecting a pre-romantic sensibility.
