JAPAN, IMARI - 20th CENTURY. Set of porcelain decorated in blue underglaze, iron red and gold enamel comprising : - a dish decorated with foliage surrounded by three reserves of flowers. Diam. 14.5 cm - an oblong dish decorated with stencilled flowers in the centre, surrounded by four flower reserves. Width 19.5 cm - A poly-lobed bowl stencilled with a paulownia flower in the centre, surrounded by three reserves of flowers. 22.5cm diameter - A pedestal bowl decorated with a perfume burner of peonies surrounded by phoenixes. Diameter 24 cm - an oval-shaped display stand decorated with two bird and flower reserves. Width 37 cm - a lobed dish, decorated in the centre with the three friends of winter, surrounded by three reserves of irises. 31 cm in diameter - a poly-lobed dish decorated with peonies surrounded by two reserves of birds and flowers. Diam. 33 cm - a chrysanthemum-shaped dish, decorated in the centre with a basket of peonies surrounded by reserves decorated with pines and flowers. Chenghua apocryphal mark. Diam. 33 cm The Three Friends of Winter are traditional Japanese motifs that recur in Imari porcelain. They represent pine, plum and bamboo, three plants supposed to symbolise strength, perseverance and elegance respectively.
