Jean Caumont was born in Paris in 1736. He received his master's degree in 1774 and moved to rue Traversière. He produced pieces in the Transitional and Louis XVI styles. They are often distinguished by a rather elaborate composition, particularly in mahogany and marquetry, adorned with gilded bronze mounts, such as solid satinwood tables decorated with fine inlays.
In his book Les Ébénistes du XVIIIe siècle , Paris, 1953, p. 52, the comte de Salverte mentions a Louis XVI console in gilded wood preserved at the Mobilier National, as well as a secrétaire à abattant in the collection of Mme Demachy at the Château d'Ognon.
During the Revolution, Caumont was elected justice of the peace and played an active role, devoting himself fully to politics in 1795, when he entrusted his workshop to his son (P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIe Siècle, Paris, 1989, p.169).
