Orange terracotta with turquoise and brown decoration Jama-Coaque, Ecuador, 500 BC - 500 AD 21 cm Provenance: Me Binoche sale, Paris, 5 March 2003, lot no. 21 The Jama-Coaque culture, which developed on the Ecuadorian coast, is distinguished by its elaborate ceramic production featuring figures with religious and social roles. Richly adorned female figures are often associated with ritual functions, with priestesses playing a central role in ceremonies and mediation with invisible forces. The abundant ornamentation, the deformed skull and the assertive treatment of the face reflect a high status.
