This work combines an anthropomorphic figure with a container linked by a handle and a tubular conduit, a characteristic feature of products from the Ecuadorian coast. The figure, shown standing with arms raised and mouth open, adopts an expressive posture evoking a speech or ritual action in progress.
The richness of the attributes - elaborate headdress, wide necklaces made up of voluminous pearls, pendant in the shape of a snake's head - underlines his high status. The presence of the snake, recurrent in pre-Columbian iconography, refers to symbolic registers linked to transformation, fertility and natural forces.
The ensemble is characterised by the combination of a utilitarian function and a codified staging, where the frontal aspect, the intensity of the expression and the treatment of the ornamentation structure an immediately legible image. This figure embodies a social or ritual role, in a direct and expressive formal style that is specific to this region.
