Description
- Seated lord with club and fan Polychrome terracotta, slightly broken and glued, minor filling not exceeding 5% of the overall mass of the work, marks of time. Fan to be glued back onto the hand Jama-Coaque, Ecuador, ca. 500 BC - 500 AD 37 x 18 x 18 cm Provenance: France Enchères Art sale, Montauban, 23 September 2006, lot no. 76 This figure shows a seated figure holding a club and a fan, attributes referring to functions of authority, probably those of a warrior leader. The richness of the ornamentation - a crown surmounted by a circular element, necklaces with several rows, nasal and ear ornaments - underlines his high status. The stance, firmly anchored to the ground, and the frontal aspect of the body, give an impression of strength and stability. The club evokes power, while the fan is ceremonial. The ensemble is characterised by a structured, assertive representation of a man of power.
