Hybrid representations play an essential role in Jama-Coaque culture, reflecting the fusion of animal forces invested with symbolic power. The association of the jaguar and the snake, two major figures in the pre-Columbian imagination, refers to a complex entity combining terrestrial power and the chthonic dimension. The open mouth, visible fangs and forked tongue accentuate the striking character of the figure, while the clawed limbs and expanded headdress reinforce its supernatural aspect. The richness of the modelling and the tension of the forms exude a remarkable presence, characteristic of the major works in this tradition.
