The Tumaco-La Tolita culture, on the Pacific coast between Ecuador and Colombia, experienced particularly intense ritual activity between the 5th century BC and the 5th century AD, with the island of La Tolita being one of the major ceremonial centres. The cranial deformations seen on these heads refer to status markers associated with elites or spiritual functions. The ensemble bears witness to a sculptural tradition attentive to human representation in a strong symbolic context.
