- Seated woman body painted for a ceremony Polychrome terracotta, head broken and glued, marks of time Nayarit, western Mexico, c. 500 BC - 250 AD 31.5 x 18 x 14.5 cm Provenance: Gaïa sale, Paris, 27 May 2008, lot no. 415 This figure shows a seated woman holding a receptacle. The body is entirely decorated with painted motifs, organised in bands and punctuation marks, attesting to documented body painting practices. These decorations, applied directly to the skin, were used to showcase the individual during ceremonies, marking their role, status or belonging. Ornaments and headdress complete this codified presentation. The ensemble is distinguished by the richness of the painted decoration and the legibility of the forms, reflecting the particular attention paid to the appearance and presence of the figure.
