Description
- Ceremonial Ocarina showing a priestess with open arms. Beige terracotta, probable restoration not exceeding 1 to 3% of the overall mass of the work, mark of time. Nopiloa, Veracruz, Mexico, AD 200 - 700 26.5 x 17.5 cm Provenance: acquired by Mr Martinez from the former Arts des Amériques gallery, Paris, between the late 1970s and early 1980s. In the Veracruz region, the Nopiloa tradition developed in the coastal plains of the Gulf of Mexico, within a cultural ensemble marked by complex ritual practices. The figures, with their deliberately unbalanced proportions and oversized heads, reflect a symbolic hierarchisation of the body, with the face becoming the seat of inner expression. The ocarinas, used during ceremonies, helped to create the soundscapes that accompanied the rituals. The posture of open arms, combined with a concentrated expression, may evoke a modified state of perception, linked to the use of hallucinogenic substances attested in these regions. The tension between stylisation and expressiveness gives the figure a singular presence.
