Description
- Seated crowned female figure.
Terracotta, orange and brown slip, slightly broken and glued with small missing piece, date mark
Veracruz, Mexico, 450 - 750 AD
31 x 18 x 9 cm
Provenance: acquired by Mr Martinez from the former Arts des Amériques gallery, Paris, between the late 1970s and early 1980s.
In the Veracruz region, on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, ceramics from the Classical period are distinguished by the quality of their modelling and the richness of their human representations. The adorned female figures, recognisable by their ornamentation and elaborate headdresses, are reminiscent of high-ranking figures. Sitting cross-legged, stable and concentrated, the figure has a timeless presence. The attention paid to the details of the ornamentation and the surface of the slip underlines the skill of the workshops, in the service of a masterful, hieratic representation.
