Description
- Vase with frieze of divinity. Polychrome terracotta, mark of time. Maya, Guatemala - Honduras, Classical period, AD 600 - 900 14.5 x 15.5 cm Provenance: France Enchères Art sale, Montauban, 23 September 2006, lot no. 4 In the peripheral regions of the Maya world, notably in Honduras and southern Guatemala, certain ceramics bear witness to the spread of models from the great classical centres. The friezes of glyphs and divine figures, inspired by more ancient and elaborate traditions, are reproduced in a simplified form, where the writing sometimes becomes more decorative than strictly meaningful. This phenomenon reflects a widespread cultural influence, within which craftsmen adapted prestigious motifs without always fully mastering how to read them. The ensemble thus illustrates the circulation of forms and symbols in the Maya area, between heritage and reinterpretation.
