This incense burner is part of the ritual production of Teotihuacan, the great city of the Mexico Valley, organised around a monumental urban structure dominated by the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon and the Avenue of the Dead. In this context, ceremonial practices occupied a central place, mobilising objects intended for the diffusion of fumigations during rituals.
Censers were used to burn aromatic resins, particularly copal, whose smoke accompanied offerings and ceremonies, establishing a link with the world of the divinities. The rich decoration, composed of floral motifs and elements in relief, refers to a symbolic repertoire associated with the plant cycle and renewal.
The presence of a figure with a recessed head, framed by wide lateral elements and surmounted by an ornate capital, suggests a figure of high rank, probably linked to ritual functions.
