Green hard stone, carved and polished
Mezcala, Guerrero region, southern Mexico, 400-100 BC
8.2 × 3.5 cm
Provenance: Estate of Mr S., Geneva, constituted between 1970 and 1980. Objects imported into France before the entry into force of Regulation (EU) 2019/880 of 17 April 2019, applicable from 28 June 2025.
The Mezcala culture, which developed in the Guerrero region between 400 and 100 BC, is renowned for its hard stone figures of radical formal simplicity. Reducing the human body to its essential lines - vertical axes, clean planes, synthetic volumes - these idols are one of the most abstract expressions of pre-Columbian art. This figure in green stone, cut and polished with precision, is a perfect illustration of this economy of means: every plane is calculated, every volume justified, in a quest for balance that anticipates some of the great abstract sculptures of the 20th century.
