Description
Ornament with fringes
with a mythical two-headed animal
Multicoloured camelid threads, marks of time.
Paracas, Peru, 800 to 200 BC
27 × 17 cm
Provenance: Estate of Mr S., Geneva, constituted between 1970 and 1980. Items imported into France before the entry into force of Regulation (EU) 2019/880 of 17 April 2019, applicable from 28 June 2025.
The Paracas, who settled on the south coast of Peru (the Ica and Pisco peninsulas and valleys), are famous for their textiles, which are of exceptional technical and iconographic mastery. The motifs of hybrid beings, often with a double meaning, are part of a ritual language in which the mythical animal expresses protection, power and transformation.
