Mochica IV, Peru, AD 300 to 500
28 × 14.5 cm
Provenance: Estate of Mr S., Geneva, constituted between 1970 and 1980. Objects imported into France before the entry into force of Regulation (EU) 2019/880 of 17 April 2019, applicable from 28 June 2025.
This iconography refers to a well-identified Mochica theme, that of the "running figures": humans or deified beings in motion, carrying a bag, sometimes associated with lima beans (pallares). Several researchers have linked these bags to ritual transmission or symbolic coding of information, with the beans serving as mnemonic devices or attributes of authority. The presence of the fox god, frequently associated with knowledge and messengers, reinforces the idea of a codified scene linked to ritual and power.
