Description
Pectoral
with a hybrid divinity holding a trophy head and a tumi
Hammered copper, remains of red and green mineral pigments on the surface, marks of age, cracks and small chips on the back.
Chimú, Peru, AD 1100 - 1400
12.5 x 12.7 cm
Provenance: acquired by the current owner from the David Bernstein Gallery, New York, on 6 December 1998
This representation is part of the Chimú iconography of the great tutelary divinities, combining animal attributes and symbols of power. The combined presence of the trophy head and the tumi refers to ritual practices associated with authority and the divine world. But it is the plastic quality of the object that is most striking: the precision hammered copper, the remains of mineral pigments and the tension of the volumes give this hieratic figure a frontal presence of rare intensity, where symbolic power and formal mastery are in complete harmony.
