Description
Stirrup vase with incised decoration of feline divinities Orange, beige and brown terracotta, broken and glued, chips on the neck. Chavín-Tembladera, Peru, ancient horizon, 700-100 BC H. 27.5 × D. 20 cm Provenance: acquired from the Ica Gallery, Barcelona, on 5 November 1997 Digital copy of thermoluminescence analysis by Laboratoire Kotalla, 5 October 1995 The Chavín culture played a major role in Andean formative cultures, disseminating widely shared iconographic models. Stylized feline representations, combined with linear claw motifs, testify to the importance of animal figures linked to the divine world. This vase stands out for the quality of its incised decoration: the feline divinities, treated with remarkable regularity and precision all over the body, form a surface that is both rhythmic and hieratic, characteristic of the formal elegance of Chavín-Tembladera production.
