Description
Cult pin
with toad-jaguar and snake-like deer
Bronze with brown patina, some localised green oxidation.
Mochica, Peru, 100 BC - 300 AD
25.9 × 4.3 cm
Provenance: acquired by the current owner from the David Bernstein Gallery, New York, on 6 October 1998
Hybrid animal figures occupy a central place in Mochica iconography, where they refer to notions of fertility and the forces of the divine world. Here, the composition at the top - an interlocking toad-jaguar and snake-like deer - reflects an elaborate symbolic thought process. Its strength also lies in the quality of its modelling: the brown patina of the bronze, the density of the high-relief scene and the tension of the forms in a reduced space make it an object of remarkable plastic power.
