Description
Urban headband
with geometric spider-like figures
Multicoloured camelid threads. Some consolidation.
South coast of Peru, Nazca-Wari, c. AD 500-700
48 × 163 cm
Provenance: acquired from the Arte Precolombino gallery, Barcelona, October 1996
In the late textile production of the Peruvian south coast, yianto turbans were used to assert the social rank and identity of the elite. The iconography of the spider takes on a particular significance here: the spider, a major symbol of fertility, is anthropomorphised and radically geometrised. This headband stands out for its exceptional graphic density - rigorous symmetries, interlocking shapes, almost cubist treatment - which gives it a strikingly modern visual presence, revealing an art of textiles where abstraction serves a ritual and political language of rare sophistication.
