Description
Large Licia cape with tie-dye decoration in repeating circles Camelid thread. Some consolidation, wear and small stains. Nazca-Wari, Peru, 500 to 1000 A.D. 94.3 × 178.5 cm Provenance: acquired from Throckmorton Fine Art, New York, 30 June 1997 In the central Andes, large cloaks were among the most prestigious items of costume, worn by the elite during ceremonies. The tie-dye technique, based on the effects of reserve and punctuation, is used here to create a very subtle negative-positive composition, in which the codified repetition of circles on a brown background creates a striking visual rhythm. The regularity of the weave, the freshness of the colours and the mastery of proportions make this cape a particularly accomplished example of Andean textile art.
