Description
Part of a large prestigious coat with embroidered frieze of figures in procession Dyed camelid fibres. A few small chips and stains. Early Nazca, south-central coast of Peru, Paracas - Ica - Nazca area. Early Early Intermediate, 1st-4th century AD 94 × 164 cm Provenance: acquired from Sebastian Rothman, Florida, 8 June 2000 The large, prestigious cloaks of the central south coast are characterised by polychrome borders in relief, inherited from Paracas-Necropolis traditions and fully developed in the Early Nazca. These embroidered friezes, which act as rank markers, are designed as continuous registers in which the close repetition of the figures creates a processional dynamic. Here, the depth of the midnight-blue field, contrasting with the polychrome brilliance of the raised border, produces a striking visual effect, where three-dimensional embroidery technique and colour make this coat one of the major pieces in this corpus.
