Provenance: Sotheby's New York sale, 28 May 1997, lot 82
The Tlatilco culture, one of the oldest in central Mexico, developed in parallel with the first Olmec expressions, with which it had notable stylistic and symbolic exchanges. Monumental human figures play an essential role, reflecting the particular attention paid to the body, vitality and expressiveness of the face. The intensity of its expression and the power of its forms make this sculpture part of the founding tradition of Mesoamerica, in which the female figure is closely linked to notions of fertility, the earth and cosmic forces. The exceptional size of this work, one of the largest known from this corpus, reinforces its emblematic status among Tlatilco statuary.
