Description
Female figure of fertility
Beige and coffee-red terracotta
Chupícuaro, state of Guanajuato, Mexico, 300-100 BC
8 × 4.2 cm
Provenance: Arte Precolombino Gallery, Barcelona
Digital copy of a thermoluminescence analysis by the Kotalla laboratory, 3 December 1987
The Chupícuaro culture, active in the state of Guanajuato between 300 and 100 BC, is renowned for its generously-shaped female figures, directly associated with notions of fertility and the goddess Mother Earth. Despite its small size, this figure is striking for the balance of its volumes - round belly, swollen breasts, deliberately atrophied arms - and the meticulous simplicity of its modelling. The symmetrical headdress, choker necklace and stylised armbands make up a codified representation of great formal coherence, characteristic of the ritual elegance of Chupícuaro.
