Description
Mask
Speckled and veined hard stone, carved, drilled and polished, remains of limestone concretions on the back, slight surface chips on the bottom of the chin.
Chontal, Guerrero region, western Mexico, Late Preclassic, c. 400-100 BC
10.7 × 9 cm
Provenance: acquired from Throckmorton Fine Art Gallery, 10 July 1998
The Chontal culture, which developed in the Guerrero region at the end of the Preclassic period, was characterised by a lapidary production of sober elegance, open to the influences of the great Mesoamerican traditions - Olmec, Maya, Teotihuacan. This mask in speckled and veined hard stone is striking for the quality of its treatment: the receding forehead, the slightly raised superciliary arches, the shell inlays in the eyes and the half-open mouth create a physiognomy of powerful, hieratic expression, in which the mastery of stylisation and the balance of volumes achieve a form of formal perfection.
