Olmec culture exerted an exceptional influence far beyond its area of origin, as evidenced by centres such as Kaminaljuyu. The baby face figures, combining a childlike body with a serious, concentrated expression, embody this founding thought. This one stands out for the uniqueness of its asymmetrical headdress and the tension of its raised arms with stylised hands pointing towards the ground. The softness of the forms, the density of the volumes and the frontal expressiveness of the face make this piece particularly characteristic of the baby face aesthetic, in the version that spread to the Guatemalan highlands and later Mesoamerican cultures.
