Description
Seated lord holding a fan
Polychrome terracotta, marks of time.
Jalisco, western Mexico, Late Preclassic, 100 BC - AD 250
16.5 × 5 × 19.5 cm
Provenance: acquired by the current owner from the Federico Benthem Gallery, Barcelona, in 1996
From the Late Preclassic onwards, the Jalisco culture developed a figurative statuary remarkable for its sense of volume and expressive sobriety. This dignitary, with his stable, hieratic posture, is distinguished by the richness of his attributes - tambas, headband, ovoid amulets, ceremonial painting - treated with a precision that underlines the rank of the figure. The quality of the polychromy and the balance of the proportions give this figure a presence and authority that far exceeds its size.
