This green jadeite pendant is part of the Olmec tradition of cutting hard stones, one of the most elaborate expressions of prestige and power. The composite figure - frontal face with wide-open eyes, massive nose with dilated nostrils, characteristic rictus and stylised wings framing the composition - reflects a symbolic thought in which the fusion of animal and human attributes expresses the power of tutelary forces. The finely polished surface, punctuated by regular hollows and pierced by biconical suspension holes, reveals a technical mastery of remarkable precision. The quality of the jadeite and the balance of the composition make this piece one of the most accomplished examples of Olmec glyptics.
