At the turn of the Common Era, the Salinar and Vicús cultures succeeded one another on the north coast of Peru. Their ceramic traditions overlapped stylistically, to the extent that some pieces bear witness to a dual formal affiliation. In both traditions, the feline - jaguar or puma - is a figure of power linked to the forces of nature and the supernatural world. Its representation on the lookout, crouching and ready to pounce, reflects a formal tension at the service of a symbolism of vital energy, characteristic of this region at a time of transition and cultural continuity.
