Description
Diminutive dog, on the lookout
Brown and beige terracotta.
Marks of time.
Colima, western Mexico, 100 to 200 AD
H: 8 cm; W: 12 cm
Provenance: former Le Corneur-Roudillon gallery, Paris. Old gallery label on the animal's belly.
Representations of dogs occupy a special place in Colima ceramics. The animal - probably the Xoloitzcuintle, a hairless dog indigenous to Mexico - was considered a guide for souls on their journey to the afterlife, and its representation in terracotta was often a funerary offering. The lively, watchful posture, the tense body and the alert gaze bear witness to the careful observation of the animal and a keen sense of expressive rendering that are characteristic of the best works in this tradition.
