Description
Female figure seated
richly adorned
Beige and coffee red terracotta. Marks of time.
Colima, western Mexico, 100 BC - 250 AD
H: 12 cm; W: 6.5 cm
Provenance: former American collection, label partly legible on reverse.
This female figure seated on a quadrupedal bench is wearing an amulet necklace, armbands and ear ornaments, all attributes that document the figure's rank within her community. The coffee-bean eyes and closed mouth are characteristic of the Colima formal repertoire. The frontal band and the morphology of the head suggest deliberate cranial deformation, a practice that has been archaeologically attested in Colima, where tabula erecta-type deformations have been identified in several funerary contexts. This modification, practised from an early age, was a marker of social or ritual identity within these societies.
