The Manteño culture developed on the coast of Ecuador, in what is now the province of Manabí, between the 7th and 12th centuries AD. The culture is best known for its U-shaped seats worn by crouching human or animal figures, reflecting a hierarchical social organisation in which prestige objects played a central role. The geometric scarifications visible on this figure are a marker of identity and rank within this society, a practice that is well attested in the coastal cultures of pre-Hispanic Ecuador.
