In the cultures of pre-Columbian Costa Rica, the owl occupies a special symbolic place. A nocturnal animal with vision that pierced the darkness, it embodied the ability to perceive what the ordinary eye could not see, and was associated with the invisible worlds and shamanic practices. On this vase, the three owls are rendered in a highly stylised style where the emphasis is deliberately placed on the eyes - large concentric circles that narrow towards a central point, evoking a gaze that is both penetrating and cosmic. The ribboned feet of the figures contrast with the synthetic power of the heads, creating an ensemble of great formal coherence.
