Description

Polychrome terracotta.

Nazca, Peru, 200 to 600 AD
17 x 13 cm
Provenance: Sale Paris, Drouot, Maître Loudmer, 15/03/1968, n°74.
Nazca ceramics are distinguished by their mastery of colour and their strong sense of stylisation, making them one of the most characteristic examples of pre-Columbian art. The hummingbird, present in the Nazca iconographic repertoire as far back as the geoglyphs of the Pampa Colorada plateau - which include a hummingbird with its wings spread out some 96 metres - is associated here with a central flower in a composition of four figures arranged in a frieze, evoking the natural cycles to which these coastal societies were closely linked.
