Coffee-red terracotta.
Chimú, Peru, AD 1100-1400

The Chimu culture, which developed on the north coast of Peru between the 10th and 15th centuries, produced modelled ceramics whose repertoire drew heavily on the marine world. The fish, a recurring motif in this tradition, reflects the central role played by ocean resources in the economy and cosmology of these societies. The flattened shape of this vase illustrates the Chimu potters' ability to integrate naturalistic representation into the formal logic of the object.
