The Vicus culture developed on the north coast of Peru, in the Río Piura valley, between the 2nd century BC and the 4th century AD. It is renowned for the quality of its modelled ceramics, in which the animal world plays a dominant role, intimately linked to the natural world and the agricultural cycles that punctuated the lives of these societies.
The batrachian - frog or toad - is captured here at a particular moment: that of gestation, its body swollen ready to release its eggs. In the Andes, these animals were highly symbolic, associated with water, the promise of rain and the fertility of the land. The eyes, modelled in relief and pointing skywards, emphasise the relationship between the creature and the celestial forces that govern the cycles of life and nature.
