The Marajoara culture, which flourished on the island of Marajó at the mouth of the Amazon River between the 4th and 14th centuries, produced some of the most elaborate ceramics in pre-Columbian Amazonia. Its decorative repertoire, characterised by meandering and labyrinthine motifs painted in continuous lines covering the entire surface of the vases, is interpreted as a stylisation of serpentine figures, an animal with a strong symbolic charge in Amazonian cosmologies. On this vase, the reddish-brown lines form a continuous network of meanders and chevrons enveloping the globular body.
