Description
Small container
with lenticular body and flat neck
Alabaster, carved from a single block. Damage to the neck.
Ancient Egypt.
Height: 11 cm
Provenance: Sale, Maître Boisgirard, Hôtel des ventes Drouot, Paris, 28/06/1973, catalogue no. 5.
This small alabaster vessel, carved from a single block with two small tenons in relief on the body, belongs to the long Egyptian tradition of hard stone vases. Its shape - a slightly flared cylindrical body with a flat neck and overhanging lip - is typical of Old Kingdom and Middle Kingdom production. Alabaster, a translucent stone with characteristic veining, was particularly prized for making vases for ointments and perfumed oils for ritual offerings.
