The Nagada culture, which developed in Upper Egypt between around 4000 and 3000 BC, was one of the first complex civilisations in the Nile Valley and the foundation on which Pharaonic Egypt was built. The Nagada III phase, also known as the protodynastic period, saw the gradual unification of the country and the emergence of the first state structures. The hard stone vases of this period, cut and polished with remarkable skill, were objects of prestige and offerings, reflecting a lapidary skill that reached its apogee during the Old Kingdom. This small vase is a first-rate document on the origins of Egyptian civilisation.
