spherical shape
Carved and polished alabaster, marks of time.
Egypt, Old Kingdom, 2700 to 2200 BC
6 x 7 cm
Provenance: Sale, Maître Boisgirard, Hôtel des ventes Drouot, Paris, 28/06/1973, no. 4
This small vessel with a globular body and two small pierced side tenons belongs to the long Egyptian tradition of hardstone vases. The squat shape and clean profile are characteristic of Old Kingdom production, a period when lapidary skills reached their peak. Alabaster, a translucent stone prized for its aesthetic qualities and symbolic purity, was particularly well-suited to the manufacture of small containers for ointments and perfumed oils for ritual or everyday use.
