Carved, hollowed and polished banded alabaster, marks of time.
Egypt, New Kingdom, 1550 to 1070 BC
H: 17.3 cm; W: 3.9 cm

This elongated vase in banded alabaster belongs to the category of vessels for kohol, a galena-based black make-up used in ancient Egypt for facial and eye care. These carved stone vases were luxury objects, often reusable, designed to hold perfumed oils and ointments. The slender shape, characteristic of the New Kingdom, and the natural veining of the banded alabaster, carefully exploited by the lapidary, give this object a sober, refined elegance. Egyptian alabaster was associated with the notion of purity, and its thick walls played an insulating role in preserving precious contents.
