Description
Horus Dark green stone, slightly speckled, sculpted and finely polished, marks of time. Chips on the edge of the beak, ear and legs. Egypt, 18th dynasty 1550 to 1070 BC H: 6 cm; W: 2.9 cm Provenance: Sale, Maîtres Rheims et Laurin, Hôtel des ventes Drouot, Paris, 17/11/1966, no. 367 Horus, the falcon god of the Egyptian pantheon, is one of the oldest and most important deities of the Nilotic civilisation. The son of Osiris and Isis, he embodied the cosmic order that triumphed over chaos and was the tutelary figure of Pharaonic royalty. Each pharaoh was considered to be the living incarnation of Horus on the throne, the first of his five official names being precisely the "name of Horus". The 18th Dynasty, between 1550 and 1070 BC, saw the solar cult of Horus-Ra reach its apogee. This small sculpture, with its wings folded in a characteristic halting posture, testifies to the mastery of Egyptian lapidaries in working with hard stone.
