Description
Goddess Bastet walking Bronze with green and brown patinas, marks of time. Minor damage to the lower legs and one arm. Egypt, late period. H: 8.5 cm; W: 2.8 cm Provenance: Sale, Maîtres Rheims et Laurin, Hôtel des ventes Drouot, Paris, 17/11/1966, catalogue no. 195 bis. Bastet, the cat-headed goddess, is one of the great protective deities of the Egyptian pantheon. Associated with beneficial solar heat, joy and the protection of the home, she is opposed to Sekhmet, her destructive lioness-headed counterpart. Her cult, centred on the town of Boubastis in the Nile Delta, enjoyed considerable popularity during the Late Period, when votive bronzes of animal divinities were produced in large numbers. This figure of a walking Bastet, carrying a basket under her arm - a characteristic attribute of the goddess - wears a long skirt and a headdress topped with small cat ears. The basket, a symbol of fertility and offerings, reinforces her protective role.
