Description
Element of a sistrum Moulded siliceous earthenware with blue-green alkaline glazes. Eroded surface with vestiges of blue polychromy, old wear, small chips and gaps. Egypt, Third Intermediate Period, 23rd-26th Dynasty. 800 to 525 BC. H: 8 cm; W: 5 cm Provenance: Sale, Maître Boisgirard, Hôtel des ventes Drouot, Paris, 28/06/1973, no. 3 This piece is the handle of a sistrum, a percussion instrument with vibrating metal rods used in the rituals of the cult of Hathor and Isis. Hathor's face - recognisable by her frontal features framed by a striped wig and her slightly protruding cow ears - is depicted on both sides of the handle, in accordance with the iconographic convention specific to this divinity. Above the face, a small naos crowned by a frieze of erect cobras forms the upper part of the handle. Hathor, the goddess of music, joy and love, was closely associated with the sistrum, whose sounds were thought to appease the deities and ward off evil forces. Siliceous earthenware with a blue-green glaze, the material par excellence for small Egyptian cult objects, reinforces the sacred dimension of this object.
